What is a mnemonic?

A mnemonic is a way of remembering something by looking at the first letters and using that as a memory aid.
The classic example of a mnemonic is the one used to remember the colours of the rainbow, which is ROYGBIV.
This is Richard of York gave battle in vain. By recalling that sentence and taking the first letters you get the order of the rainbow, e.g. Red Orange Yellow Green Blue Indigo Violet.
