What is a spot test for alcohol?
Question asked by: knowitall
A spot test is an easy to do test that be done on the spot, hence the name.
A typical spot test for alcohol could be:
Use chromic anhydride in a solution of sulphuric acid.
This starts off as green in colour, but turns orange in the presence of alcohol; this is due to the change in state of oxidation of the chrome in the presence of alcohols.
Note that the anhydride is not a pleasant substance and is poisonous and carcinogenic.
