What is an advert funded business model?

As the name says, this is where adverts pay for the business.
This is the current market preferred online.
For instance friends reunited used to charge people to go in and find their friends and their contact details.
However that site is now dead compared to facebook in traffic terms because people don't pay for that information anymore, they expect it for free as enough providers now do this and fund the ability to do that by getting adverts to pay for it.
