What is an alkyl group?

An alkyl group is a name given to a specific combination of atoms in a molecule, and the alkyl is the dominant group that determins behaviour.
Alkyl groups are carbon and hydrogen from an alkane molecule, formed through the removal of a hydrogen atom.
Replace -ane with -yl, e.g. methy CH3 from methane, CH4.
