What is an alkyl group?

Question asked by: knowitall

An alkyl group is a name given to a specific combination of atoms in a molecule, and the alkyl is the dominant group that determins behaviour.

Alkyl groups are carbon and hydrogen from an alkane molecule, formed through the removal of a hydrogen atom.

Replace -ane with -yl, e.g. methy CH3 from methane, CH4.

That's all there is to it!
