What is consciousness?

Consciousness is the phenomenon where we are aware of ourselves and what we do.
Whereas many creatures and perhaps all other animals are a slave to their makeup and go about what they do on instinct, perhaps unthinkingly, we are aware of ourselves and what happens to us and how what we do affects the world around us and vice versa.
