What is dark energy?
Question asked by: knowitall
This is defined as "The residual energy in empty space which is causing the expansion of the Universe to accelerate."
Dark energy is theoretical and it is not known exactly what it is, or what it is made of. It was postulated to explain the fact that the Universe is expanding quicker than it has done in the past, which could not be explained with just ordinary matter and dark matter in the equation. It seems there has to be some force in what was otherwise considered 'empty' space, and this is called dark energy.
It is mysterious in that no one really knows what it is, and is currently one of the exciting questions being asked of theoretical physicists. Whilst dark matter is pulling us together, dark energy is forcing us apart!
