What is Descartes famous for?
Question asked by: mrquestion

Descartes is famous for being a philosopher, and his most famous statement is that of "I think therefore I am".
This was the fundamental principle that he could not doubt, having tried to strip back all his assumptions of the world around him to that which seemed undeniable.
However this of course (phrased in this way) has itself been shown to contain assumptions by modern day philosophers.
The other thing he is famous for is his contributions to maths and most notable the Cartesian set of co-ordinates used in graphing to this day.
