The doppler effect refers to the phenomenon whereby sound seems to alter pitch as it comes close or goes further away, when in fact it stays the same.
It is caused by soundwaves compressing the nearer it comes to you - appearing higher pitch - then stretching as it moves away - appearing to lower in pitch.
