What is leather made of?

You can get leathers of different animals, but in general the word leather refers to the hide (which is the skin) of the cow.

Leather has been popular for a long time as it is tough, natural and also looks good in leather jackets and so on, though it is starting to get a little controversial with some as it is an animal product.
