What is meant by retardation and is somehow related with the terms of positive acceleration or negative acceleration ?

I just read somewhere that retardation is not related to acceleration but i heard somewhere it is related to acceleration. I just wanted to confirm what is correct.

Retardation is the process of slowing down, something that slows down is said to be retarding, and it is therefore reverse acceleration (in effect).
