What is Paula Abdul on about in American Idol?

This is a great question and something that a lot of people ask.
All this stuff about a beautiful tone in the voice, tonality, flavours, shades of this that and the other in the voice - has anyone else heard these or know what they refer to?
Certainly Simon Cowell seems to raise a lot of eyebrows and get confused by these comments about textures... can voice have a texture? Surely not!
