What is simulation theory?

This theory suggests that the world around us is not 'real' in the traditional sense that we associate with it.

Rather, the theory states, we are all taking part in a very sophisticated simulation of a super-intelligent species. This is a real possibility, in the knowledge that we may be in a infinite multiverse with extremely advanced lifeforms.

We can take the analogy literally as in we are perhaps in the most sophisticated computer game that we know about.

We can not directly seem to disprove this theory, however it need not concern us - if true we can continue as normal. It is an intriguing possibility, but in terms of day to day life should be put firmly to the back of one's mind!

The idea has been mulled over in philosophy for a long, long time, with many variants - the experience machine, the brain in the vat thought experiment and so on. It was popularised in a particular way in the film The Matrix whereby the computers take over the world and enslave humans in a world of their own creation - The Matrix.
