What is the chinese room?

Question asked by: knowitall

The chinese room is a philosophical experiment set up by John Searle to suggest that acting as though you have understanding is not itself enough for understanding.

In other words it rejects the behavioural analysis of understanding and therefore also the Turing Test for intelligence.

As usual people divide in two camps some accepting the conclusion whilst others reject it and say that the chinese room or the system as a whole does understand chinese.
