What is the Jupiter red spot?
Question asked by: knowitall
The Great Red Spot of Jupiter is famous.
But what is the red spot?
Well, analysis has shown that this is actually a great storm that has been raging on the surfaec for hundreds of years!
It is a very high pressure area - like a hurricane on this planet.
As for the colouring of the storm system, this is more of a mystery and to be honest it is not fully understood why it has this colour.
The most likely theory is that it has some compounds of phosphorus in the area, but we are not sure if this is the case - and indeed if it is why there is particularly prevalent levels of phosphorus in this area.
