What is the reason in many times shale is source rock of hydrocarbons

Because they are formed in similar conditions, where there are likely to be the formation of hydrocarbons you will find shale nearby due to the fact that it is often formed in those sorts of locations too.

This is just a guess as I don't know the answer for sure but at least it makes sense to me anyway!
