What is the surface of Mars like?
Question asked by: knowitall
The surface of Mars is interesting, but not because it contains channels formed by aliens as was thought for along time and as recently as the middle of the 20th century by some people!
The surface was studied by Mariner 9 which told us a lot about the surface indeed.
There have been many volcanoes in the past but these no longer are active.
There are many craters too from impacts on the surface. There are also canyons which it is thought were formed through tectonic activities rather than erosion.
However, there are channels that do seem to have been made by running water and this implies that there could have been the conditions necessary for life on the planet at some stage in the past given its closeness to the sun and the presence of running water on the surface.
