What is the surface of Neptune like?
Question asked by: knowitall
Neptune is a distant planet - the eighth from the sun.
Neptune orbits the earth every 165 years.
It is a large gas planet, though much smaller than the likes of Saturn and Jupiter.
It is mainly hydrogen and helium gas, but with many heavier elements too than those two gas giants.
It is not known about the core, but it is inferred it is rocky and about the mass of 15 times the Earth.
The blue colour we associate with the planet is derived from the methane that is prevalent in the atmosphere of the planet - which absorbs red light.
It rotates every 16 hours or so.
It produces much more heat than it absorbs - in fact about 2 and a half times the heat.
