What layer protects the earth

Question asked by: source

Asked on: 23 Sep 2009

There are lots of layers that protect the earth - so it depends on what you are asking about.

For instance protection from cosmic rays come in general from the fact the earth has the atmosphere and various layers have lots of particles that the cosmic rays collide and react with, or get broken up on entry.

For magnetic protection the magnetosphere can deflect particles.

The ozone layer can also, because it has reactive ozone or o3, react with many particulates that would cause radiation damage to organic matter on earth.
