What role did comets play in bringing resources to earth?
Question asked by: mrquestion

Comets have brought a lot of stuff to earth, though quite how much, how significant it was, and indeed how much of a payload actually survives impact in a useful manner is up for grabs.
It is thought that the inner planets have far too little carbon, for instance, compared to what they should have, and therefore that perhaps the carbon the earth had naturally might have boiled away or formed gases like carbon dioxide and escaped early doors.
Therefore it is thought that things like most of the carbon on the planet earth was delivered by comets battering the planet relatively early on in the history of the solar system.
