What sort of number gets smaller when you press xy on a calculator?

Do you mean x to the y? In which case there are many numbers that fit the bill. Clearly the key is that the number is less than 1.
So for instance a fraction is such a number.
Try it:
Try typing in 4^ (1/2) and you will find that you get 2, so the number gets smaller. Any fraction is similar.
