What was the direct democracy?
Question asked by: knowitall
Direct democracy is what you used to have in ancient Greece - when literally all the eligible citizens were able to turn up and have their say by putting their hand up to vote on matters.
This was possible because there were so few citizens and they lived geographically close enough in Athens.
Because they were directly involved it was a direct democracy. That contrasts with a representative democracy like we have today where we aren't involved directly, but rather vote in representatives to make decisions for us, and in our best interests - in theory at least!
