What was the Viking mission to Mars?
Question asked by: knowitall

The Viking mission had much publicity in 1976 as the Viking 1 and 2 landers were there to look for evidence of one thing... Life on Mars!
They studied the chemistry of the surface to try and find telltale signs of life on the planet. They looked for organic compounds associated with life on earth and did other tests looking for clues that life might have been there.
Overall it was thought that the results showed that there had been complex inorganic chemistry on the planet, but not proof or organic activity, e.g. the chemistry of life.
