When I dye my hair red it goes too dark. How can I lighten the shade?

The best way to dye your hair the shade of red you want when you have dark hair naturally is actually to do the following:
First dye the hair blonde to get it really light. Then once that has settled down after a day or so then move over to using the red dye.
This way round you will get the red shade to look right straight off - often it looks too dark if you go straight from black or dark brown first.
