When was a monetry system first used in england?
Question asked by: knowitall

This is hard to answer as it depends in large on archaeology and our ability to dig up quite literally evidence of the past.
However it is known at least that the Romans when they came used coinage on a regular basis and therefore this is definitely a stage where money can be traced back to.
Even before that it is likely that there were coinages in operation so an exact date as to when money came into circulation for sure in the UK is the subject of contention and cannot be stated absolutely.
