When was radioactivity discovered?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Asked on: 04 Feb 2010

Henri Becquerel discovered them in 1896, this was whilst working on something else.

The term itself comes from the Curies who were famous for their work on radium and indeed on some other unusual and radioactive elements such as polonium.

There was rapid expansion in knowledge as radioactivity was examined in detail, but for those first researchers it was not appreciated how dangerous radiation is to the human body and therefore several people including the Curie's were killed by their work.
