Where does the water on earth come from?
Question asked by: knowitall
Whilst the effluent from a volcano is probably around 60% water vapour, it is not likely that there was enough water naturally on earth to account for all that around us today.
We therefore need to look at other sources.
The most popular theory today is that most of the additional water was delivered to the earth after it formed, and that this was done through collisions with left over planetisimals and cometisimals.
