Which came first the chicken or the egg?

The answer to this riddle is the egg.
The answer is to realise that the question does not specify it must be a chickens egg that came first!
The answer follows because there were animals laying eggs a long time before chickens evolved as a species, and so therefore the answer must be that the egg came before chickens.
