Why are crossword grid symmetricals?
Question asked by: mrquestion

Crossword grids do not have to be symmetrical but it is true that they usually do exhibit rotational symmetry.
This is the same sort of symmetry that is now familiar to us from the majority of sudoku puzzles.
In other words if the top left cell of the puzzle is white, then the bottom right cell with be white too, and so on, to build up the grid.
The reason I think is just that it is visually more appealling on the eye to have a symmetrical grid; in general symmetry is pleasing to the human eye and I suppose that is the reason why crossword grids tend to be symmetrical.
