Why are many people afraid of clowns?

Coulrophobia is the name of this and it is surprisingly common.
There is something sinister about the traditional clown make up which makes many not like them.
Sometimes it is triggered by a bad experience with a clown or through seeing a portrayal of a sinister or scary clown on TV.
