Why did Simon Cowell leave American Idol?

Simon Cowell is said to have left American Idol because he wants to concentrate on bringing the X-Factor brand to America which now appears to be happening with the recent announcement that it will be on in the Fall in the US.
However some people have said it is ultimately money motivated because X-Factor is Cowell's show and therefore he could potentially earn a lot more if X-Factor proves to be a hit than from American Idol. Also he might just be bored of American Idol as it has had so many seasons now it might seem a bit samey so a fresh challenge would be appealing.
