Why do people pretend to be busy at work?

This is office politics and office games at work.
Everyone always says they are busy so that their job looks good and they feel important and other people valu ethem.
Also if you don't want to get more owrk then if you say you are busy it is less likely to happen else you might get given more work if you are twiddling your thumbs!
