Why do we associate little green men with extraterrestrial life?

It's a good question. I suppose that when people first started to imagine life elsewhere then one of the first images that came to mind for someone somewhere was the little green man.
This has been particularly associated with martians and then extrapolated to extraterrestrial life generally.
Of course whether an alien would actually look like that is not particularly likely and infact they might be in a form completely unrecognisable to what we could ever reasonably imagine based on our experience!
