Why is Craig Revel Horwood so rude to contestants?

There are two schools of thought on this. The first is that he's trying to emulate the Simon Cowell type effect and become the nasty judge in order to secure his role on TV (and why not when you get the BBC throwing all the taxpayers money at them).
The other school of thought is that this is just his natural personality and he is quite ascerbic and sarcastic in his wit by nature.
