Why is there less carbon in inner planets than would be expected?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Science homework is getting more interesting these days I see.

The reason for the so-called carbon deficit on Earth is thought to be due to the high temperature whilst the solar system was forming.

It is thought that the temperature would have been sufficient for the carbon to boil off and leave the planet.

However recent research has suggested this might not have been the case and therefore it is more likely due to reactions occurring stimulated by heat and fire that made carbon react with gases such as oxygen and form gaseous compounds that therefore escaped the earth, leaving carbon to come to earth as the payload of comets and other material in the solar system.
