Why is there so little hydrogen on earth when it's so abundant in space?

Question asked by: mrquestion

Asked on: 25 Jan 2010

Hydrogen is a gas and being a gas there are two options.

The first is that it escapes or boils away from the planet and certainly this is the case with a lot of hydrogen.

However it is also a reactive gas and therefore there are huge amounts of it locked up in compounds.

As a clear example, most of the earth's surface is covered in water.

And when scientists started to be able to examine the make-up of things like water in more detail, they discovered that water is made up of hydrogen atoms bonded with oxygen - so infact there are huge amounts of hydrogen around after all!
