DIY and safety tips at home...

Lots of people love DIY and this can come at a great cost to your health!

A large proportion of accidents in the home that end in hospital treatment are the result of people trying to improve things through their DIY.

So what can you do to improve safety? Here are a few tips.

The first is obvious - ensure that where you work it is well lit, people working in dark conditions are more likely to hammer their fingers instead of the nail.

Second, stop when you get tired and have a break. Particularly where balancing when you get tired you might either lose concentration or your legs might start to wobble a bit - neither of these are what you want to happen when you are doing some DIY!

Next up, you should ensure that you are always standing on something sturdy and secure, if the base wobbles at all don't climb. It's also essential when working with heights you have someone else there too, so someone to hold and steady the ladder and check everything is OK. Never, ever work alone when you are even just on a step ladder nevermind anything else, it's just not worth it.

Never touch anything electrical either unless you are a qualified electrician, it is a recipe for disaster. Remember to always turn the power circuit off for the room you are working in just in case.

When you are nailing into walls or doing anything that may be near electrical wires, you should use this great relatively new gadget that beeps when there is a wire near it - so you know that you are not going to come across the electrics always use this tool before drilling or going into a wall so that you know there is no danger of you coming across live wiring.
