Modelling and mistakes to avoid...

Modelling is a very competitive industry. This means that many people are very desperate to get into modelling and this desire can mean we lower our guard and are easier to become victims to scams.

When you get a mail through the post saying that you can earn thousands of pounds a week with no work and have a photo of some guy with a flash car and a fat cheque, you are likely to rip it up and put it in the bin.

But when it comes to what you really desire - modelling - you may be more likely to part with your cash in return for, well, you don't know what.

The key thing to remember is that the reputable modelling agencies will not charge you up front but rather they will take a commission when they book you and get you work. This means they will only take you on if they really think they can get you work else of course they will lose money on you.

But the good thing is there is no cash investment up front and they will work hard to promote you.

However if you hand over your cash up front then an agency has already made money from having you on their books, in fact if you pay a large registration fee then instantly they have made a decent sum of money without doing much in return - great for them but not so good for you.

Therefore always try to find a good agency that does not charge up front. Talk to other models and see who they have used and what they recommend, and you might find some good contacts through this process as well.

Obviously there are some large agencies in most major cities, and if you know reputable ones of these they may be worth approaching.

Questions Stephanie has Answered:

Are there any hard and fast rules on what your measurements need to be for modelling?

As a general rule, model agencies expect that men are at least six foot tall whilst woman are about 5 foot 9 or taller. Men tend to need to be well built and muscular with a toned body, whilst with women basically the emphasis is on them being skinny. Some countries are stricter than others whilst the best way is to contact an individual agency you are interested in and ask if they have particular stats you must measure favourably against.

Do models shave their faces? i know that the pictures in mags. use lots of make-up, camera light etc. but their skin looks so smooth, glowing & flawless. i have tried just about everything to cover redness, sun damaged skin, dark circles. help i need some. thank you, caroline

It depends on the model and how much facial hair they have. If they start to develop a fair amount of hair on the lip or if they have dark hair then yes they might, those with fair hair or little facial hair will not as a rule shave their faces.

I am really serious as a teenage girl and i want to get modelling straight away, what is your best advice for me to get started

If you want to get straight into modelling then first remember that it is not as glamorous a world as people say - it can be bitchy, hard and difficult. If you are still determined, then you need to get a portfolio done - source a reputable photographer and get a good range of shots showing versatility but also targetting the area of modelling you think you are strongest suited to. Then get in touch with agencies that are close enough to you to be convenient for you and also that are either generalists or specialise in the type of modelling you are interested in, and see if you can get to meet someone there, be persistent and believe in yourself.
