Kill the spot, zip the zit, blend away the blemish

Spots add at least a little stress to the lives of most teenagers and sometimes longer for those with oily skin or prone to spots.

Acne can affect more than just the face of course and can also affect the back, neck chest and even the arms, too. There is no difference between those with different skin colours - acne and spots can affect us all.

The first thing to remember is that you are not alone if you suffer from spots or acne. Indeed it is estimated that 80% of people between about 11 and 30 suffer from spots at some time.

Acne is caused by the sebaceous glands that make oily substances being overactive. This is often caused by fluctuating hormone levels in puberty which is why it is so common to suffer from spots and acne at this time.

Sometimes things progress even further to get redness, swelling itching and even scarring due to bacteria growing in and around the sebum.

Myths about Acne and Spots

It is commonly believed that acne or spots are caused mainly by eating things like chocolate or foods that contain fat. However this is not actually true.

Acne is also not contagious from one person to another, therefore there is no added risk through being in contact with someone else who has spots.

Also blackheads are not black through dirt being in the skin, it is actually a particular skin pigment being present that causes this so washing does not just get rid of it as they are not dirt.

How not to treat acne

There are some things you should not do when it comes to treating acne as they make acne worse.

For instance, do not squeeze or pick as this can spread infection and leave scarring.

Also try not to rub hands over the face or get greasy hair on the face. Try to be relaxed as stress can help to make spots worse too.

Getting rid of spots and acne

The best way to get rid of spots and acne is through washing your face twice a day with particular attention to the areas with spots on. Make sure that you use a good quality cleanser that has no perfume in it, as this can negate or even irritate the affected area.

Use treatments with an antibacterial substance in them, this is normally benzoyl peroxide which seems to be one of the most effective treatments. This chemical also tends to dry out the skin a little which in turn makes it harder for pores to get blocked.

You also need patience. Most people want instant results but the reality is just not like that. You often need to give treatments about two months to show decent results so don't abandon all hope within that period.

If no over the counter treatments work then you can always see your doctor who may prescribe oral or other medication.
