Why would anyone collect stamps?

The question that many people have is 'why would anyone collect stamps?'

On the face of it it's true to say that it does seem rather boring and a pointless hobby, but like anything when you get into it it can be quite obsessive.

The great thing is there is always something new and exciting to collect and getting a large bunch of stamps that haven't really been examined looking for a gem of great value can be exciting.

And it can also look good - lots of stamps are really pretty not to mention valuable. A top collector can be quite rich from the value of all the stamps that are in their collection.

And you never know when you might strike gold and find something special that others have missed.

Also of interest is the fact that some elements are hidden to the eye such as the phosphor bands on some stamps that are revealed under ultra violet light - get a left banded 1/2p stamp for instance and suddenly rather than having something worthless you've got something worth a very nice sum of money indeed, as it is one of the rarest of the definitive stamps out there.

These are contrasted to commemoratives in the UK which are those with the pictures.

Of course you can buy ready made sets when you start collecting but that does defeat the object a bit it is more fun to go through and try to collect all of the various definitives yourself, and there is real satisfaction in completing a collection.

It can also actually be quite fun to start a stamp collection and quite social as there are lots of events around the country that you will have the chance of getting involved with.

And so there you have it, some good reasons for starting a stamp collection and getting interested in this fun hobby, and if you ever get bored of it - then flog your collection and count your riches!
