Things to do on a train journey...

Having had a usually long delayed journey recently (Virgin cross country trains, running 50 minutes late because apparently the senior conductor hadn't turned up), I thought it was time to write an article on things to do when your train is delayed.

The first option is the most relaxing, and is to go to the waiting room and have a good sleep - if there is no waiting room then anywhere that is warm and dry is a plus, so a coffee shop or magazine shop if there is one.

If not, then sit down and try to do something productive like your paperwork.

If it's dark and there is nowhere to sit and you have no method of getting light, then it can seem like a real frustration.

However there is still lots of useful stuff you can do in your head to pass the time; the more you concentrate the quicker the time passes and the less annoying it is.

So you could either brush up on your mental skills by challenging yourself to complete some maths sums, for instance.

Another option would be to think creatively and start writing that book you've always wanted to write in your head. For instance you could start planning the story line, major plot or come up with some inspiration.

Perhaps the main character is stranded at the train station in the dark when they suddenly notice a mysterious flashing light around the back of the bike shed only to walk there and realise that something very strange is going on...

In other words try to turn the annoyance and frustration of waiting for a massively delayed train (if you're in Britain, people in other countries might not relate to this) into a positive experience and get something useful and productive out of the time spent waiting rather than just getting frustrated and seeing it as 'dead time'!
