Among the metal atoms there exists metallic bonding. A large cohesive force holds the metallic structure together. There is no covalent bond. Hence, when heat is given to a metal the cohesive force decreases and the metal melts. On the contrary, among the nonmetallic atoms there exists covalent bond. Hence, the metals are malleable and nonmetals are non-malleable.
