Hey,
I have 4 dogs and they would never sit until I learned how to do this trick from a friend. Make both your hands in a fist but not together, then move your thumbs facing you and put you hands together but still not on top of eachother. Than say sit a few times and he will be golden!

Teaching your dog to sit

This is what we did to train our Border Collie X Kelpie. We used Smacko's as his reward treat, he just loves them and still does 8 years on.
Call your dog to you, when he comes tell him how much of a good dog he is and give him a good pat, no treats yet.
Put a doggie treat in one hand and tell him "Sit", while your giving the command, hold your empty hand out flat and pointed towards your dog, this hand may also have to gently give his butt a gentle push downwards if he doesn't catch on, when he does sit, praise him and give him his treat.
Repartition and patience is the key.
Once he has learn't to "Sit", teach him to "Beg". Command him to "Sit" and give him only praise and a big pat, let him know you have a treat, tell him "Beg", at the same time put your hand with the treat above his head, your hand should be directly over his head leaning towards the back of the head, this will urge him to lean backwards and upwards, hence the "Begging" position. lf your hand is at the front of your dog he will lunge towards you to try and get his treat.
You might have to show/ help him to raise his front legs until he gets the idea of things, remember Repartition and Patience. Let me know how you get on, we could have him "Jumping" through a"Hoop" in no time. Good Luck.

It takes a lot of patience to train your dog to sit. I would suggest buying a clicker to help. To begin with, when you say sit, you may need to gently push on your dogs back to encourage him to sit, then, click the clicker immediately afterwards and follow with a treat. He will eventually get the message and realise that if he sits whne you say sit, he'll get rewarded.
