Why are strawberries Red?

My 8 year old son asked why are strwberries red? I've search the internet but cannot find a simple answer. Please can someone help.

Green means it is not ready to eat and red means that it is ready to eat

Hi,
as the fruit matures, just before it is ready to drop off, the strawberry produces sugar, (this process is the same in autaum leafs.) This reacts with the strawberry turing the strawberry red, this is why we eat strawberrys when they are red.

A strawberry is red because it reflects off the red light. It absorbs all the colors besides red that's why to us it looks red.
