How did th growth of nationalism help spread protestantism

Because people identified protestantism with their own nation, and therefore since they also wanted to promote their own nation, or nationalism, it helped with their identity, over a universal religion such as catholicism which was shared with other countries and therefore, whilst the right religion, did not give them the same sense of identity therefore they preferred to adopt protestantism for the sake of being able to gather behind it in a united national front.
