How many characteristics of life are there?

There are seven so called characteristics of life.

These are properties that all things that are classified as alive have to display, although there is some debate with objects such as viruses therefore if they count as alive.

The seven are:
cells
require energy
reproduce
have heredity
respond to stimuli (the environment)
maintain internal balance
evolve and adapt over the passage of time
