What causes erosion?

Erosion is caused by the action of one substance on another, and usually happens over long periods of time.

Thus for instance the action of water on rock may erode the rock over time, through friction and forces, and make the rock disappear or be ground down for instance to form sand.

Erosion may also happen from the action of the wind, for instance on exposed sand banks to reduce the integrity and make the sand bank crumble.

Moving ice can also erode as happened and happens still with glaciers.

In summary, then, erosion is the reduction of one substance by the movement of another.
