You throw a basketball by exeting a force of 20 newtons. according to newton\'s third law, there is another 20-newton force created in the opposite direction. if there are two equal forces in opposite directions, how does the ball accelerate?

Presumably do they not cancel out, if you have something pushing 20m/s in one direction and also something else pushing the same way in the other direction then does that not make the total acceleration 0?

That might be completely wrong so not sure!
