How To Become An Interior Designer
DIY : Decorating Definitely contact local design companies you can do work experience with, and hopefully you'll get a placement at an interior design shop/company. This will be valuable experience which will allow you to see if this career is definitely for you, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and also make contacts with people within the industry - they may even offer you a job afterwards! Also, in the mean time, collect all the free catalogues you get from homestores and DIY shops, and made a big collection. Newspapers, info from websites and borrowing books from the library are good too. You could start picking out different furnishings, colour schemes etc and stick them all onto a sheet of paper as if you were planning a new room. Put together a portfolio of ideas and drawings to help develop them and give you inspiration for future projects. There are various computer software packages and design programmes you can buy to help put your ideas together aswell. These may help a lot, but could be quite tricky to get the hang of if you have no previous design experience. Go through the tutorials though and you should be fine. Take your time with it!
