Bird Friendly Gardens

Pets : Other Pets

Keep you garden safe for birds by using these tips.

Buy a bird table that suits you and place it somewhere not too close where cats can pounce.

Ideally you only need to leave food out for the birds during the colder months each year, as natural food is more sparce. Sunflower seeds are great and also safe for young birds.

As soon as you start putting food out, make sure you keep it up as they will start to rely on this source and may otherwise waste their energy visiting.

Keep the area clean by brushing away old food and give the table a quick wipe every now and then with a light kitchen disinfectant or an animal one.

Dont forget squirrels may also feed off of it, so take this into account when buying a feeder as it may fall off a tree if a squirrel tries to hang off it. A metal one will also be longer lasting than plastic.

Nesting boxes are a great way to provide shelter for birds during the winter too. Keep children away from bird feathers and droppings as they can be harmful to humans.
