Many people set themselves the target of coming 'lean' but exactly what does that mean?

Well, it varies from men to women, so both should aim for different levels of body fat.

For women, the percentages are:
15 - 20%: lean
20 - 25%: normal
26 to 32%: higher fat
33%+: obese

For men the figures are:
8 - 12%: lean
13 - 19%: normal
20 - 24%: higher fat
25%+: obese
